From Software’s Souls series has practically created it’s own genre due to its critical and commercial success, mostly from its challenging gameplay and superb level design. This series has caused many others to be born, inspired by them but never a carbon copy, usually adding something unique, something different to the experience.
Nioh used smaller levels with boss battles and a stance system of gameplay, Lords Of The Fallen tried to craft a more story-driven experience with a modifier in an increase of experience points when not using a checkpoint. Even From Software have strayed from their formula with critically acclaimed Bloodborne and with their latest venture in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The Surge took a more scientific approach and used a limb targeting system in order to get specific gear and items from enemies. While it received average reviews, it was generally favorably received. Enough to warrant a sequel from Deck13. Well, today at Gamescom a new alpha gameplay trailer was shown off for The Surge 2 and it has great potential, especially if it builds upon everything it did great in the original.
