An eagle (snake?) eyed redditor has spotted that Armature Studios, the team behind the Metal Gear Solid HD collection on PS Vita, (PS3 port was handled separately) has added PS4 to the list of platforms on the title’s webpage. The Vita release only included Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 whereas the PS3 version also included the PSP exclusive Peace Walker.
The headline on the page is ‘Archived content coming soon‘ meaning that an announcement could be imminent. With Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear franchise, leaving Konami recently the future of the Metal Gear Solid series has been in doubt. The latest game, Metal Gear Survive, is a budget priced spin off that has little gameplay connection to the other games. It also doesn’t seem to have a lot of hype despite a February release date. However sales will be the decider whether or not the series continues in this multiplayer, action focused direction. It makes sense to assume that Konami would want to cash in on their IP using the critically acclaimed and beloved classic games in the series.
The series is massive worldwide, selling at least 30 million units across several huge games with the most recent being Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I hope some of the earlier games do get new life on current genre consoles.
