Remember Runescape? It was a cultural phenomenon throughout the early 21st century, an absolute pioneer of what free, online based community gaming would and could become. The game attracted over 250 million users and still attracts over 2 million players every month. Developer Jagex has added to this with Old School Runescape. This is a version of the classic game that emphasizes community engagement. An in game polling system is used to allow a unique collaboration between active players and the developers and shape the future of the game the way the community desires.
That collaboration continues this week as Jagex reveal their newest raid, Theatre of Blood.
“Voted into the game by ~90% of over 40,000 polled players, Theatre of Blood sees raiding parties running the gauntlet of battle-thirsty warriors, nightmarish creatures, and facing taxing, life-threatening puzzles. The final act is a bitter fight for survival against Lady Verzik Vitur, one of the last true-born vampyres left in Gielinor.”
This is the fourth part of the Myreque quest line and sees players reach the titular location, home of Lady Verzik. The raid allows group of up to five players to take on a serious of challenges in a variety of rooms. If a player dies they must watch from the sideline until the room is defeated, then they are revived. If the team all dies in one room, it’s raid over. In another outstanding show of loyalty to the community, some of Runescape’s best and most renowned raiders were flown in to playtest the raid including: B0aty, MMORPGrs, Mr Mammal, Zulu, Classix, DedWilson, Woox, Reed, and Dalek Cookie.
