The Writer Within XIV

Before we get into this, I would like to thank the very talented Matt Made for stepping in for me on the last Writer Within. He is a very talented writer and an up and coming YouTuber who produces great content. His review for Darksiders 3 is one of my favorites. Thank you, Matt.

Let the games begin.

There is this fascination with sexualized characters in video games, which is appalling and weird. This is the tale of two games; Mortal Kombat 11 which is ‘not sexy enough’ and Dead Or Alive 6 that is ‘too sexy’. Now, my question is… Who actually looks at these things in gaming? Especially in fighting games? People have too much time on their hands and the internet was a mistake.

Mortal Kombat 11 goes first. On this website, they complained about Jade and her design, which shows less skin than her Mortal Kombat 9 model. If you follow the storyline of the Mortal Kombat games, you’ll know that Jade is dead, hence her green zombie-like skin tone now, and because of this, she has had a drastic redesign. Now, if you’ve been paying attention, NetherRealm Studios has taken a grittier and combat focused character design. This means that these characters have all these new elaborate armor designs because you can unlock gear to customize and personalize your version of each fighter. Chances are my Skarlet won’t look like yours, even if we have the same armor type, our colors will more than likely differ.

There are alternative skins to choose from but nothing really here that is sexual like on prior entries. But, does it really matter? Why are we complaining about seeing a fictional character’s body? Why are we analyzing Sonya Blade’s breasts and comparing them to prior entries and complaining because they are smaller? How does this affect gameplay? How does this affect the enjoyment of your experience?

If you pay attention to twitter, you’ll find some people tweeting stuff like this:

If this is your reasoning for buying a game, I suggest you put the controller down and go meet a real woman. The designs look cool, the game looks great, and it looks it’s going to be a ton of fun. Stop looking for things to complain about and, by the way, if Jade was a real woman she wouldn’t want you, dude.

Then on the other side, Dead Or Alive 6 is apparently ‘too sexy’. It’s the exact opposite of the Mortal Kombat 11 situation but I think this one is far worse. Evo Japan agreed to show the stream of Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo representatives where they were showing the game and having a presentation with a simple goal: sell their game. The series is known for its large sex appeal and has always been a selling point. So, Evo Japan knew what they signed up for. That whole apology that they did after pulling the stream because the team behind the game decided to parade two scantily clad girls on stage who jumped up and down and slapped each other’s butts was all virtue signaling and pandering to SJWs. All to make themselves look good while attacking the company because they haven’t conformed to their ideology and continue to provide a visual atheistic a large portion of their fan base has come to enjoy. Apology dude is as fake as his apology.

What’s my take? I wouldn’t have used the tactics that Team Ninja did, but I don’t hate them for doing so. Let me state the main point.

Let developers, artists, and creators make what they want and how they want. If you’re getting hot and in the mood from Dead Or Alive 6, you have a different problem entirely. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. I’m so tired of this negative and whiny community that just attacks and throws tantrums at everything. It’s fake rage to incite unneeded fires and then they walk away. The main people complaining are the same that are more than likely never going to buy the game, to begin with.

Leave Mortal Kombat alone, leave Dead Or Alive 6 alone, and leave what makes others happy alone.

Fighting games are fighting games and the most important part of that is the mechanics and whether you’re having fun. Yes, character designs are nice, and you want to play with cool looking characters who are doing cool things but sex appeal or looking sexy doesn’t matter. I’m amazed this is an issue but at least we got another Writer Within out of it.

Maybe next week we’ll talk about how journalists hate white protagonists people because ‘there are too many of them’.

What do you think? Are you offended because Dead Or Alive 6 has too much sex appeal? Angry because Mortal Kombat 11 doesn’t have any? Comment down below and remember to follow The Loot Gaming for all your gaming news and reviews.
